  • Jim Coles is an artist who thinks deeply about the mechanics of club music. His work as Om Unit is an ongoing exploration of the rhythms and tempos that underpin our dance floor experiences. Coles often grounds his music in established genres, such as footwork, drum & bass or jungle, but he's often looking for a hack—that is, a drum pattern or a mood or a texture that combines things to make something new. Through a series of edits as Philip D Kick, he was credited with starting the dialogue between jungle and footwork, although it's a tag that Coles himself takes with a pinch of salt. He's worked with boundary-pushing labels like Metalheadz, Civil Music and Idle Hands, but these days he's pretty focused on his own label, Cosmic Bridge, which he set up to bring together similarly curious artists from different musical backgrounds. Coles tends to speak openly on most topics, and on the afternoon Ryan Keeling sat down with him in his house in Bristol, this included his views on machismo in drum & bass and his struggles with depression.
