Ben Frost billed for Unsound New York

- This year's edition of Unsound Festival New York will take place at the beginning April in various spots around the city. The lineup so far presents the mixture of electronic music and avant-garde performance that's become Unsound's calling card, both in New York and its native Poland. Proceedings kick off on April 6th with the US debut of "We Don’t Need Other Worlds. We Need Mirrors," an audio-visual performance celebrating the 50th anniversary of Polish author Stanislaw Lem's classic novel Solaris. Unsound favorites Ben Frost and Daniel Bjarnason will play guitars and electronics, joined by an ensemble of 29 string players, two percussionists and a prepared piano, while video screens display moments from Tarksovsky's film adaptation of the novel, manipulated by Briano Eno and director Nick Robertson. Later in the weekend, multi-talented electronic artist Uwe Schmidt (of Senor Coconut fame) will make his New York debut as Atom TM. Earlier that night, John Carpenter collaborator Alan Howarth will share a bill at Le Poisson Rouge with Harald Grosskopf of Ash Ra Tempel and US drone darlings Emeralds. Further drones will come from veteran artist Lustmord, who played his first concert in 20 years at Unsound in Poland last fall. Just like last year, the more club-oriented events are co-hosted by local promoter The Bunker. This year's Bass Mutations party features Lone, Badawi and Russian dubstep artist Kontext. The following night will feature more 4/4 sounds from KiNK, Petar Dundov and Octave One among others. The weekend before all this begins, a closely related event called Unsound Festival New York Labs will take place. In addition to a series panel discussions, a selection of underground Polish artists will perform, along with Taylor Deupree, Felix Kubin and gloom specialists Raime and Demdike Stare. Precise dates and venues for these events have yet to be confirmed.
