- Italian horror film soundtracks and King Tubby-style dub mixing are some of the staples of the British hip-hop veteran's latest.
Dr Zygote has a new album on the way this September called Grupo Zygote.
The record will launch a new "library series" offshoot of Black Acre, which by the sound of it should help to broaden the bassy Bristol label's remit. The album should also help Dr Zygote, a veteran jungle and hip-hop producer who's recently been recording as Strange U, expand on the music he's known for. He describes the process of constructing the album as reductionist, with dub mixing being one of the main techniques on offer. "Almost all the tracks use tape echoes I hooked up using my tape machine and the mixer," he says. While no samples were used on Grupo Zygote, it draws stylistically from '70s Italian horror film soundtracks, Photek and King Tubby.
