  • Noor Zahi Salman, the wife of Pulse nightclub shooter Omar Mateen, has been charged by federal prosecutors under antiterrorism laws. Last June, Mateen killed 49 people at Pulse in the deadliest mass shooting in modern US history. Salman was questioned for 12 hours by the FBI on the day of the shooting, and had previously claimed she was unaware of Mateen's plans, condemning the assault in the process. In a federal courthouse in Oakland today, at her first appearance after the charges were brought, a prosecutor contested previous statements, saying, "She knew he was going to conduct the attack." She's also charged with misleading investigators. (Source: The New York Times.) Salman was arrested Monday at her home in Rodeo, California, and could receive a life sentence if convicted of aiding and abetting her husband, who was killed after opening fire in the club and holding patrons hostage. The owner of Pulse, Barbara Poma, plans to make the site into a memorial for the victims.
