Doc Scott calls the techstep LP "truly ahead of its time."
XL Recordings will reissue Sawtooth, an influential drum & bass album by UK artist Jonny L.
The label says Sawtooth, which was first released in 1997, inspired the "tectonic shift in sound" that paved the way for techstep, a subgenre defined by spacey sound design and crisp production. Considered the first LP in this style, it found a middle ground between techno and drum & bass, full of delicate synths and intricate details. The forthcoming reissue, which lands this Friday, December 8th, will be the first time the album has been pressed onto wax since its original release.
"Sawtooth was the first drum & bass album that was truly ahead of its time," says the veteran artist Doc Scott. "It was great when it came out but 20 years later it's still a benchmark."
