- The label discovered a box of tapes with the artist's name on it three years ago, at a storage unit auction in East Detroit.
Ultramajic has announced a release featuring late-'90s electro tracks from an unknown Detroit artist named Ashtar Lavanda.
You won't find much information on Ashtar Lavanda online. Apparently, Ultramajic cofounder Jimmy Edgar discovered his music in 2014 by acquiring a collection of tapes at a storage unit auction in East Detroit, including "one box [which] contained meticulously dated tapes from 1995-1998" with the mysterious name on it.
The label tracked down Ashtar Lavanda nearly two years after finding those tapes. The connection has now led to this six-track release, and unspecified upcoming releases which the label says will showcase the sounds of a producer on par with some of Detroit's best-known electro outfits: Drexciya, Dopplereffekt, AUX88 and Ectomorph.
We're told Lavanda had rented space at analog studios to record his tracks, and he's quoted as saying, "I just wanted to see my music on [the television series] The New Dance Show, I wanted to hear it on 97.9 FM, but I didn't have the hustle to get the music out there."
