- "We were inspired by that moment in the club when things get hazy and bendy and glowy," the producers say.
DJ Lag and Okzharp are releasing an EP together on Hyperdub.
The idea for Steam Rooms came about after the two artists connected while touring, and its title comes from DJ Lag's home of Durban, South Africa. "They used to refer to clubs as steam rooms," he says, "a lot of the early gqom-style music was played in these places."
The four new tracks reflect the EP's name, too, as well as the producers' roots: "We were inspired by that moment in the club when things get hazy and bendy and glowy. It has South Durban via South London DNA... there's a heavy kwai-gqom vibe with a grimey, funky London twist running through it."
Okzharp has previously released an LP and EP on the London label with Manthe Ribane. DJ Lag has released two EPs via Goon Club Allstars and one himself.
Listen to "Nyusa."
