  • Jlin has soundtracked a new video game as part of a commission for this year's Manchester International Festival (MIF). Created by award-winning Canadian designer Paloma Dawkins, Songs Of The Lost is a "magical-realist game odyssey through a surreal and absurd digital landscape," according to the press release. Jlin, who produced ten new tracks for the project, is one of eight collaborators. It's the second time a video game has been made especially for MIF. "Everyone is talking about borders these days, and I want to imagine what borders would be like in a post IRL world," Dawkins said. "If some kind of super AI was uploading minds into a database, what kind of system would be in place to separate the bots from the real people? I imagine that humans would have no more privilege in this kind of world, our advantage has ended. This game is about that scenario. You are asked to voluntarily give up your autonomy and exist in the garden for eternity as a shadow of your true self." In addition to Songs Of The Lost, Jlin also performed live at MIF as part of a bill curated by the BBC Radio DJ Mary Anne Hobbs. Other festival highlights included Skepta, Holly Herndon and David Lynch. This is Jlin's first new solo work since last year's Autobiography, the score for her collaboration with the world-renowned choreographer Wayne McGregor. (You can read about that show in last year's Unsound review.) Watch a teaser for Songs Of The Lost featuring music by Jlin. You can also download the game for free.
