- Heisei No Oto features 16-tracks picked out by Eiji Taniguchi and Norio Sato of Osaka's Rare Groove record shop.
Music From Memory has announced its next compilation, Heisei No Oto - Japanese Left-field Pop From The CD Age (1989-1996).
The 16-track set includes productions by Haruomi Hosono (pictured with Love, Peace & Trance), as well as recently lauded Japanese composers like Yasuaki Shimizu and Toshifumi Hinata. But rather than the '80s environmental and ambient sounds that have experienced a resurgence in popularity, Heisei No Oto presents gems released on CD as that format began to dominate the market.
"Spending tireless hours in local record stores and embarking on digging trips across the country, Eiji Taniguchi and Norio Sato, much like Chee Shimizu, have been at the forefront of unearthing and introducing many of the very Japanese records now loved and sought after around the world," the press release explains. "Yet as YouTube algorithms and vinyl reissues would transport such music into the global consciousness and demand and therefore scarcity intensified for such records, so Eiji and Norio have recently begun to turn their attention to CDs."
The collection's title refers to the Heisei era, which corresponded with the reign of Emperor Akihito and the culmination of the Japanese economic boom. Heisei No Oto will come on double-LP and CD with liner notes from Chee Shimizu.
Music From Memory co-released Yu Su's debut album, Yellow River Blue, today. Another compilation, the RA-recommended Virtual Dreams, served as the label's 50th release.
