- Laila McKenzie and Ian "Snowy" Snowball aim to raise £25,000.
Laila McKenzie and Ian "Snowy" Snowball have launched a Kickstarter campaign today, March 8th, for a new book celebrating house music's women trailblazers.
The coffee-table book runs the whole gamut of industry professionals, from DJs, producers and artists to promoters and management, featuring more than 120 interviews with the likes of Candi Staton, Barbara Tucker, Sam Divine, Ellen Allien, DJ Paulette, Maxinne and Kym Mazelle.
"Some of the women in this book are the glue of this industry and we wouldn't have a scene without them," McKenzie told Resident Advisor. "It's so important to have, as a young woman, somebody who's been there, done it, wore the T-shirt—and wore it well—speak to you and tell you what they've done."
McKenzie and Snowball have set a target of £25,000 to help the project break even and will donate £1 from each book sale to the Night Time Industries Association's (NTIA) #weareallinthistogether campaign, an initiative to promote equal treatment and diversity in the night-time sector.
"I want women to know that they can be more than the DJ, the artist, the producer, the singer," McKenzie added. "There are other things you can do and you can actually really excel at them. It's important to start documenting legacy right now because we could easily be forgotten about."
McKenzie is a Bristol-based promoter and music events manager with 20 years experience in the electronic music industry. Snowball has contributed to more than 30 books, including Marshall Jefferson: Diary Of A DJ, which he co-wrote with Jefferson.
