  • The Other Radio in Cape Town has unveiled its new website and studio space. Launching today, September 16th, the previously remote-run station will now operate from its new studio hub, located on an inner-city rooftop. It coincides with the launch of their new website, which will broadcast live and provide an archive of recent recordings. The studio interior was designed in collaboration with Limb, a visual artist based in Johannesburg. Because of the prohibitive cost of electronic equipment in South Africa, they plan to host DJ lessons and other community-driven initiatives to help work around some of the many barriers to entry which exist for young artists. "Generally, people here become DJs because they’re friends with the venue, or because they’re rich, so it became a very white, male-orientated, wealthy audience who run the dance spaces in the city," cofounder Aaron.P told Resident Advisor. "Whereas now, radio’s kind of opened it up so that anyone who's got good taste can get behind the decks." Featuring over 70 hosts, regular guests on the station include Rose Bonica, Stiff Pap, River Moon and Planet Mu's John Wizards, with a strong focus on local artists, labels and collectives. The Other Radio is a division of The Other, a creative studio and music culture company run by Aaron.P and Phijos. Alongside running a record store and curated event series, they're part of the team behind Cape Town's Search Festival. They also host a monthly show showcasing South African scenes on Gilles Peterson's Worldwide FM.
    Tune into The Other Radio.
