Geeeman - Bang't

  • Clone certainly isn't the only label with an imprint acting as a veritable time machine to Chicago's early days, but Jack For Daze has certainly maximized quality and originality (within the confines of their remit, of course) as well as anyone trading in the vintage stuff. Every Clone offshoot, it seems, requires a Gerd alias, and on JFD, he's Geeeman—embracer of some of the prolific Dutchman's wilder tendencies. Like Rubberband2, Gerd's first Geeeman excursion, Bang't sounds like it was rescued from some long-forgotten crate at Mr. Peabody Records, the Chicago digging institution. But as good as Gerd is at putting on different hats, he brings plenty of his own touches to the package. On "Bang't," his signature manifests in the simple organ riff—plenty familiar to anyone who's heard a few Chicago records, but like so many other Gerd hooks ("Freedom," his 2009 kickoff for Clone's Royal Oak series, comes to mind), it's devastatingly effective. "Fire Extinguisher," the set's real jack track, trades in tough dissonance that's likely to cut through any crowd. Loud and proud, Geeeman means business as much as any Gerd alias, and this tenth installment of JFD signals that dance music isn't likely to turn its gaze from Chicago any time soon.
