- It's perhaps unsurprising considering the amount of cratedigging that Giles Smith and James Priestley have doubtless done between them, but the most consistent ingredient of the releases so far on the now singles-focused secretsundaze label has been a healthy dollop of nostalgia. This backward-glancing trend reaches new heights with Flori's Lucy—a two-tracker of blissfully sweeping and well structured house.
"Lucy" is an extraordinarily gentle track, its eddying pools of crystal-clear synths lapping gently before a fragile piano eases its way in. On first listen it calls to mind Laurent Garnier's "Last Tribute from the 20th Century"; the two records are structurally and tonally very similar, but there's more delicate variation in "Lucy" and a barely perceptible yet welcome release of tension.
"SU-Z25" is more purposeful; all echoing chrome and clattering bass. Following in the footsteps of many a secretsundaze-championed record, it relies on heavy repetition and subtle changes in atmosphere to make its unhurried point, losing itself and listener alike in its compelling groove.
