- You can't accuse Zee&Eli of being boring. The four moody house tracks that make up the Ego's Veil EP twist and turn at every opportunity, and are pregnant with atmosphere. On the title tune the UK duo build layers of bubbling arps, whiplash snares and ghostly toms before, midway through, unleashing a swarm of buzzing hornet sounds. It's a formula they don't tinker with too much on "Fateful Matter," although this time it's even more aggressive, the angry synths more menacing. There's again a transition halfway in, with the track settling as a bass-quaking DJ tool.
"Envy," the EP's standout, summons a mood that owes something to John Carpenter, with the help of chinking keys, banshee-like synths and a doom-laden bassline. "Focal Point" is an effective full stop: peppered with clanging train bells and scratchy cockroach noises, it's the sort of rhythmically challenging house you could imagine Robag Wruhme conjuring up. And that, of course, is a very good thing.
