- You might already be familiar with NSWL019, the debut 12-inch by Night Slugs youngblood Neana. The percussive "Bow Kat" has become a staple for DJs playing stripped-down, hyped-up club music, having appeared in a number of mixes since early 2013. It's a versatile production that, due to its chugging drums and quasi-melodic use of Rebound X's oft-borrowed "Rhythm & Gash" riddim, works well alongside vogue house, Jersey club and grime permutations. As Neana's sole original production to see release, "Bow Kat" marks the arrival of a confident newcomer with a vision of where dance music could be headed.
The flip is a bootleg rework of Kingdom's "Takedown Notice." Using punchy snippets of Kingdom's slow-jam "Vertical XL," Neana fashions another track that explores the possibilities of rhythm and space. Hacked samples crack, splash and shatter, only making room for the stuttered kicks to pummel you every other bar or so. The bootleg operates similarly to Neana's muscular remix of "Sharks" by Llesca, as it recontextualizes the meaty bits of "Takedown Notice" in a robust yet slyly agile arrangement.
