Ghost Culture - Mouth (Shan & Gerd Janson Remixes)

  • "Mouth" was one of the highlights on Ghost Culture's patchy debut album. One of the few tracks that was improved by a vocal, it simmers slowly to life, eventually revealing itself with flickering synths, elastic bass and a laconic vocal. Like Gabe Gurnsey's rework of "Guidecca," the first post-album remix release, Gerd Janson and Victor Shan's opening two remixes shear away original's vocals, though both retain its bass pattern. The "808 Culture Dub"'s soaring pads and flexing synth chords make it the pick of the package, while the "Acid Mix" also fares well, adding a fevered edge to the bass, a giddy clatter of snares and—yes—parping rave whistles. Both are well worth the price of admission, which is a good thing, because the "Club Mix" has a whiff of a contractual obligation. Its linear house and acid touches are unsurprising, at least compared with the two other reworks. An instrumental version of the "Club Mix" ensures that most copies of this record will be more worn on the A-side than the B.
