- Although they emerged in 1994, after jungle had broken in the UK, the Metalheadz crew quickly became scene leaders. In '95 they launched the legendary Sunday Sessions at London's Blue Note, and by '96 they were also running a Saturday event at Leisure Lounge. Source Direct, two teenagers from just north of London, also started out in 1994. At the height of their game, they put out two 12-inches through Metalheadz. Stonekiller, released in '96, is the second of these, and has been remastered and reissued digitally.
As a term, "darkstep" might sound corny 20 years later, but it conveys the dread and ominous percussion acrobatics that tunes like "Stonekiller" are infused with. It's as serious as a heart attack, with cold wind blowing in the background, eerie string drones and metallic bird calls. Anything resembling melody operates in minor key. With jump-up snares and bass touched with funk, "Web Of Sin" is less oppressive. Zooming out from the details of either track allows you to revel in Source Direct's greatest talent: beats as slippery as quicksilver that strike a delicate balance between keeping the floor in motion while maintaining complexity.
