Lipelis - I Only Did These For Myself, But Now It's For Everyone

  • Melbourne's Animals Dancing parties cover a range of styles, hosting the likes of Suzanne Kraft alongside the abrasive sounds of Vladimir Ivkovic. The label arm is more focussed, releasing hypnotic and percussive tracks featuring obscure samples, as heard on the Eastern-tinged self-titled EP by Dude Energy and the didgeridoo-equipped "Kookaburra" by Coober Pedy University Band. The Russian producer Lipelis also has a penchant for sounds from far-flung places. His new EP, I Only Did These For Myself, But Now It's For Everyone, is his first since a 2015 12-inch for L.I.E.S called Lipelis Edits. The new EP comes from the producer's "private arsenal" of tracks, which the label says took some convincing to break open. I Only Did These For Myself is clubbier and less odd than the L.I.E.S. EP. "Children Song" features an obscure-sounding sample of kids singing, not dissimilar to the entrancing Thai vocals of a song sampled for the L.I.E.S. release. This time there are punchier kicks and a bubbly melody with peak-time appeal. The combination is similar on "Video Track" but less arresting. Percussion provides the hook with a loopy drum break and African chants weaving underneath. Even so, it will still freak out the crowd.
