- Another cosmic, minimalist release on the key Bristol label.
- Until recently, Via Maris's music was focused on the low-end, blending the weighty bass of dubstep with the mind-bending percussion of UK techno. But on Shelleys, his record for Mistry earlier this year, listeners heard more of his melodic side. "Side Effects," Maris's contribution to Timedance's Patina Echoes compilation, further explored that melodic touch. With a foundation of bleeps and a chord that curled and warped throughout the track, it showed an evolution that was more balanced between the high- and low-ends.
"Glow Wall," the A-side on Maris's debut for Livity Sound, is light and colourful. An 8-bit synth hook floats in waves, like the fluttering of a flute. It's the catchiest Maris has ever sounded. Where his earlier tracks may have inspired heads-down, locked-in-the-zone appreciation, "Glow Wall" is the sound of dancers spreading their limbs across the dance floor in joy. "CU2" is more introspective. Snaking percussion weaves around glacial pads, wrapped in immaculate sound design. There's more character and colour to Maris's productions on Glow Wall / CU2 than ever.
