  • On any given day, you might find Mija tweeting about making happy hardcore, uploading gentle acoustic guitar covers of Radiohead, or playing an impromptu house set in Brooklyn. Some will know Mija as a former EDM DJ, whose kinship with Skrillex led to high-profile festival sets. Where those sets presented a eclectic mix of drum & bass, house and electro, her recent explorations have tried deeper sounds. In the last year, she's embarked on a live band tour, pairing her vocals with grungy, lo-fi-leaning music. She's released liquid drum & bass, a 24-minute ambient piece and sang on a single with Kill The Noise. She's even found time to score an anime film. Mija also seems especially interested in the underground club world. Her most focused foray into house music yet comes in the form of Sweat It Out, released on DJ Haus's Unknown To The Unknown sub-label, Hot Haus Records. "Sweat It Out" has an upbeat bassline and Mija's own smoky vocals, with lyrics telling the tale of a late-night foray through clubland. You get a sense that Mija's recent moves into the more intimate side of DJing have given her a sense of calm, a slowdown from her time soundtracking pyrotechnics and neon-clad ravers. "Sweat It Out" is simple and spacious, a short and sweet house track that doesn't do a whole lot, but would fit nicely into the opening hours of any club night. The rising Frankfurt producer Ludwig A.F. Röhrscheid keeps things low-key and weird, pitching down Mija's voice while adding strings and cosmic bells to create a slightly shamanic vibe. For a producer who's seemingly fine with doing everything and anything at once, Sweat It Out finds Mija channeling the basic bliss of house music—and doing it well.
