A captivating and tender bonus cut from Yaeji's year-defining mixtape.

"When In Summer I Forget About The Winter" is a perfect coda to What We Drew 우리가 그려왔던, Yaeji's quarantine-defining mixtape. It reminds me of "After Hours" from the Velvet Underground's 1969 LP: a wonderfully sweet and naive ditty with plain-spoken lyrics and a heartfelt sentiment.
Yaeji's drums move along at a tinny, mid-tempo lope, creating a wistful, autumnal feeling. On the surface the song is about escapism—forgetting your loneliness when you're in love, forgetting the rain when it's sunny out—but something darker lurks underneath, as Yaeji's voice nearly breaks when she says "When I realize / I'm a bit forgetful." It's vulnerable, almost confessional, turning Yaeji's positivity on its head. But in this mode she's no less engaging, and hearing one of dance music's most distinct characters at such an intimate moment is endearing, showing that her talent extends to after the party is over, too.
