- The rhythmic blueprint of the Nyege Nyege sound.
- "For us, it's a cultural exchange, when you have electronics mixing with indigenous percussion, authentic sounds, we teach each other," is how Nilotika Drum Ensemble leader Jajja Kalanda described the thrilling syncretism behind the Nyege Nyege collective. While Nilotika is a staple of Nyege Nyege parties (and the rhythm section of British-Ugandan group Nihiloxica), until now there hasn't been a full record of the unadulterated drum group. On "Ejokawulida," the septet of young percussionists—whom Kalanda instructs in both drumming and tailoring clothes—weaves thunderous polyrhythms building on the ancient drumming styles heard in Iteso traditional music.
