  • If you've ever spent time with Brazilian funk, chances are you'll crack a smile listening to Quatro Faces do House. It's a joyful (and artful) blend of four-to-the-floor kick drums and gnarly baile funk samples. The EP is the latest from Golden Kong—the alias of Fernando Simões, a New York-based DJ and producer who started on SoundCloud, broadening baile funk sounds and fashioning contemporary club music from classic Brazilian rhythms. On Quatro Faces do House, swaggering, sexy and even violent lyrics meet svelte house music for such an intuitive (and sometimes funny) mix that it'll make you wonder why has no one done this before. There are probably a few releases like this one floating around streamland, but Golden Kong's EP feels so fresh because it gets right to the point. The EP's title translates to Four Faces Of House, and it lives up to that name with four very different takes on this hybrid sound. The opening track slides in a hefty rhythm section paired with lashing keys and moaning vocals, only to be outdone by the MC's abrasive vocals as he raps about flashy streetwear. The track's New York garage undertones set the high-energy pace for "Olha O Que Ela Faz," a tribute to the muffled, sample-chopping style mainstreamed by Daft Punk, with flamboyant horns and proggy guitar lines, while the ghettotech-inflected "Jiu-Jitsu" offers hints at the darker side of Golden Kong's work. The EP ends on a different note, with a smooth house beat and aerial synths (and hints of acid) on the groovy "Esced." Quatro Faces of House is an on-point assemblage of house and baile funk, bringing out some of the best sound signatures of both genres—the soulful and mesmerizing house beats and the biting, rowdy style of baile funk MCing. Golden Kong's laetst EP is a good addition to a number of releases that bend Latin American electronic music into other traditions from around the world, and vice-versa (many of them released by labels such as Australia's Wile Out). Quatro Faces of House is undeniably funky no matter what genre it's riffing on, and it could easily soundtrack both ravey house dance floor or a baile funk street party.
