- Brief but tantalizing batida tracks from a Lisbon rising star.
- Lisbon's PT Musik has never belabored the point. His first EP under the name, Não Sou Perfeito, was made up of three tracks that, together, clocked in at under ten minutes. The brevity isn’t surprising: he tumbled his way into Lisbon's scene as a teenager under his Puto Tito alias with a muddy assemblage of half-sketched samples. His latest is no different. Short and sweet, slippery and fleeting. It’s also his first on the digital-only Naive offshoot Naivety after two EPs on Príncipe, a move that puts him in conversation with an even wider range of the vibrant, eclectic sounds of his home scene.
El Mundo Oscuro offers a sleek take on batida, blending together the symphony of African subgenres and other dance music styles bursting out of the Tigus River suburbs where the producer grew up. "No Fim Da Noite" revs up the record with a whizzing synth that bounces off syncopated drums, a fuzzy, satisfying low end tying the whole thing together. "Carbono" is a languid roll through handclaps and a staccato vocal sample that grow into a spacious and hypnotic rhythm. Finishing out the EP is "Other," a dreamy groover with a catchy piano hook that nods to house. All of them could easily be twice as long. Maybe one day he’ll bless us with tracks that break the five-minute mark. Or maybe the magic is in wanting more.
