  • WEMA is a new collective consisting of Msafiri Zawose (a multi-instrumentalist known for experimentations with Tanzania's Gogo music), modular synthesist Photay and Afro-Latin ensemble Penya. Each play to their strengths on their debut, revealing the versatility of their respective styles. Built on a four-to-the-floor cadence, "LUANJE PT. 1" feels made for open-air parties with a vibrant arrangement of funky percussion, spacious synths and Swahili vocals. There's a lot going on, from layered harmonies to undulating keys to explosive drums, but each element manages to shine without interference.
