  • In recent years, South African dance music has reshaped the London club scene in a big way. A plethora of artists, labels and parties have recontextualised the sounds emanating from the townships, melding amapiano and gqom with elements of Afrobeats, grime and UK funky to create something that better reflects the hybridised nature of the UK capital. "Bulldozer," the new single from Durban "gqom king" DJ Lag and revered South London MC Novelist, is the latest chapter in this fertile club cultural exchange. Stylistically, it's a simple proposition, with Novelist laying down punchy, urgent bars over a suitably angsty gqom beat. "Big Novelist comin' like a bulldozer / I got the enemy confessin' that it's all over," he chants, his quickfire flow gliding across syncopated percussion. But this unfussy formula only accentuates the understated potency of "Bulldozer," a track that could easily be deployed as electrifying club weapon in the right hands.
