- Half club and half ambient, Perko delivers his best work yet, with two esteemed collaborators.
- Copenhagen-based DJ and producer Perko quietly materialized in a tasteful corner of the club scene around 2018. He's spent the years since patiently building a discography that straddles moody ambient and lithe, uptempo dance music. These two energetic lanes are distinct, yet united by the way he builds sound worlds that feel like they're disintegrating into thin air as you take them in. Perko’s short-but-very-sweet new 12-inch for Numbers only reinforces his knack for variety, aided by features from Huerco S. and Cucina Povera.
On "Prang," Perko steers the automotive sound Huerco S. explored on last year's Plonk in an even more driving direction. The track is centered on a wubbed-out bassline and crisp drum machine groove, which lay the framework for cascading droplets of percussive treble and dubbed-out chord stabs. The second track, "Sisu," is more atmospheric. Luxembourg artist Cucina Povera injects the subdued sound Perko has explored on previous works "Sky Host" and "Galerie" with a refreshing, almost mossy quality. Warbled vocals rest atop unearthly piano notes and droning synth pads. I only like to whip out the overused Burial comparison when it's truly deserving, and "Sisu" effortlessly harkens back to Untrue standouts like "UK" and "Dog Shelter"—tracks that work melodic voices, distant static and fluorescent keys into similarly foggy forms. Together, the tracks here clock in at just under eight and a half minutes. But in that short amount of time, Perko and his collaborators conjure an absorbing landscape marked by slick peaks and eerie valleys.
