- The young, Príncipe-affiliated producer is settling into his own dark and playful spin on batida.
- By Lisbon's batida scene standards, DJ Narciso is getting on a bit. The 24-year-old has been producing modern takes on tarraxo and kuduro dance music with his crew RS Produções since the age of 15. Almost a decade later and his group have had two albums out on the flagship batida label, Príncipe, while he has also been self-releasing his own singles on the side. Proibido Filmar is one of those. Dropped on a Bandcamp Friday, it strikes the same balance between moody and goofy as some of his best songs on the recent Saúde Em 1º Lugar EP from RS Produções.
Odd warblings spring up like a Whac-A-Moles throughout "DOIDAS," while overdriven and pitch-bent guitar chords give "DAMAS LISBOA" a spooky undertone. And the whirling sirens on "DESCARTE" brings to mind those jagged tumbi plucks on Missy Elliott's "Get Ur Freak On." Proibido Filmar has a similar haunted swagger, showing how this dark and playful energy is fast becoming a signature of DJ Narciso's music—which is only getting better with age.
