- Creative, dynamic club music from a fast-rising star.
- Surusinghe's music feels like it spawned from a psychedelics-induced nightmare and was refined for the grimiest warehouse. Her brooding basslines and siren-like synths are jarring in the best way, as if Surusinghe crafted the songs as alarms for the sole purpose of reminding you to head to the nearest party. The Australian-born, London-based DJ began releasing her own music in 2022 and has already delivered some of the grittiest party tracks of the last two years. Her latest EP, Brake Fluid is no exception: a small but mighty project packed with four vigorous club tunes (self-dubbed "alien club music") rooted in South Asian influences.
Brake Fluid showcases what Surusinghe does best on "Bop" and "Bet": pacing. Both tracks land at her sweet spot of 135 BPM, and show off her knack for building suspense—not only during the intros, but also during subtle pauses of silence between the forceful drums, seesawing synths and vivacious rhythms that make up the hooks. "Bop" follows a similar flow, instead weaving in vocal samples and Bollywood-inspired melodies through the beat. "Boka" and "Brain" are more monotonous, although not boring by any means. Both are full of pulsing bass and furious breaks made to put listeners in a trance. "Boka" is also the most fast-paced tune of the bunch, coming in at 146 BPM, but it loses its groove when it ditches the quick-changing cadence of club music and rather follows the tempo of a techno tune.
For a frequent partygoer, Brake Fluid might not sound too out of the ordinary from what you'd hear on a regular Saturday night out, but with less than two years under her belt, Brake Fluid shows a lot of promise. Surusinghe provides the optimal balance between maximalist and minimalist moments on the EP, proving that her keen intuition and understanding of the dance floor is why she's on every DJ's USB right now.
