Leon Vynehall - Duofade

  • A deceptively subtle banger.

  • Leon Vynehall is at that rarefied stage in his career where he can drop a single track without any real promotion and make a splash—and that's exactly what he's done with "Duofold." The advertisement was DJs around the world playing it for months before it came out. And why wouldn't they? The new track is Vynehall at his most Vynehall, featuring decaying synths that would make Nathan Fake blush and a funky kick drum and skronky bassline interplay that I bet Four Tet wishes he came up with. Much like Theo Kottis's excellent "Lighthouse," "Duofade" is a subtler breed of banger than the dayglo anthems that have ruled clubland lately. The vocal is hushed, the bassline kept at a carefully managed rolling boil and the jumps in intensity incremental rather than seismic. It's a balance of the physical, the cerebral and, of course, the pleasurable that Vynehall always pulls off so neatly.
