- "Look at the moon!" is a phrase we've all uttered in moments of awe. Whether it's oversized, hanging low and blood-red or high, full and white against a black night sky, our only satellite is often regarded as an untouchable thing of beauty. It's the same sort of moment you've probably also felt when hearing some of Audion's greatest hits: "Mouth to Mouth," "Just a Man" and "Billy Says Go" have seen Matthew Dear build a collection of cathartic, deep dance floor tracks that may make up the most important catalogue of his many aliases. "Look at the Moon" is a part of Dear's new series, an open-ended project that will see him release tracks over the course of the year presumably in the lead-up to a full-length album.
Audion is Dear's dark and dirtiest disguise, and the thematic Op Art covers of color and bold shape enhance the surface area of his original productions. While "I Am the Car" was a slow build that moved like large bubbles rising in a thick swamp, "Look at the Moon" is a pile of fractured samples that are constantly re-arranged. Chunky lasers and sonic shards bounce about against a padded surface. At its peak, the melodic vertigo that Dear conjures so easily is brought full force. While the song is definitely dark, there's an airy spring to the rhythm's step. It's a step forward—moving from his grittier beginnings, and ending up somewhere a bit more smoothed out and rich.
When we're told to look at the moon, there's an expectation that something special will happen when we gaze upwards. As the Audion series continues, we can safely hold the same sort of expectation of Dear.
