- Certain slabs of electronic music reduce grown men to tears, others result in clothing being cast asunder and hands raised to the roof. So far in 2011, though, there aren't many records which make you feel like doing both. Deadboy's latest release, Wish You Were Here, somehow blends both effortlessly.
There's some distance between southeast London and Glasgow—but it's from these two corners that Deadboy and the Numbers crew have met, a bass-loving liaison which has done much in spreading the word for both parties. Currently touring with the label in the US, Deadboy has been one of the much aped trailblazers of this futuristic, constantly-evolving take on garage, house and bass.
Deadboy's releases to date have all pushed the feeling forward. "U Cheated," "If U Want Me" and his slo-mo take on Drake's "Fireworks" have mixed up R&B with regret and heartache, all braised across a flexible 2-step backbone. "Wish You Were Here" takes this template, fits it to a clipped, rolling house beat and sends it spiralling off on an eight minute adventure full of filtered synths, vocal fragments and unadulterated euphoria.
"Here 4 U" and "Ain't Gonna Lie" make up the rest of the flesh of the EP. The former has been floating around since last year, yet demonstrates that Deadboy is still unafraid of taking his electronic heat into deeper, more broken territory. "Ain't Gonna Lie" comes with wooze and finishes the EP in darkness over a reverberating ping-pong beat. All good stuff, but it's the rolling "Wish You Were Here" that is perhaps the most exciting energy flash on display. For a producer working under the name of Deadboy, the man is making superlative dance music which is very much alive.
